The SLK 230 Kompressor roadster is now available with a new 5-speed manual transmission. In addition, the SLK is equipped with a new generation stereo that uses fiber-optic technology and integrates controls for the optional portable cellular phone. Also new for 1999 is an AMG-designed Sport Package that upgrades the wheels to 17-inch from 16-inch diameter with high performance tires. The Sport Package also adds new sporty lower-body paneling. The SLK comes equipped with BabySmart child seat recognition system which utilizes transponder techonology to deactivate the front passenger-side airbag in the presence of a compatible child seat. For added safety, the Brake Assist system provides shorter stopping distance in emergency braking.
